Famous Cities of the World: Melbourne

Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia, after Sydney, and is the capital of Victoria. It is a city with something for everyone, where an unassuming shop front may lead to a world class restaurant; a small cul-de sac could conceal a dozen cafes, galleries or designer boutiques - a city of surprises, but also known for its cultural delights. Melbourne is located in the south-eastern part of Australia and is situated on the Yarra River. It was established by free settlers from Tasmania in 1835, and declared a city in 1847 by Queen Victoria. Melbourne is a research led university and its researchers are at the forefront of international scholarship in fields as diverse as human rights, art conservation and nanotechnology. Its students are inspired by the quality of its staff, which include Nobel Laureates, eminent scholars, award-winning researchers and other internationally renowned thinkers.

Melbourne is well known for its sports enthusiasm but also for its class and sophistication. Travelers here will find a host of exciting things to experience. Melbourne is notable for its mix of Victorian and contemporary architecture, its extensive tram network and Victorian parks and gardens, as well as its diverse, multicultural society. Melbourne is the most Greek city outside of Greece (Experience has shown me however that the average Greek in Athens generally has a much better grasp of English than first generation Greeks in Melbourne). Most of the Swedes seem to have at least one family member working for Ericsson.

Melbourne is a highly ranked, research-intensive university with a strong international reputation through its world-wide alumni and a focused portfolio of bilateral partnerships with some of the world’s best universities. Melbourne is like an Aussie version of Europe, it’s so relaxed and social and don’t get me started on the shopping. Sydney is a really beautiful city, but Melbourne has the ultimate lifestyle and it’s so classy. Melbourne is also the intellectual hub of the nation, hosting eight major universities, and is arguably, the core of biotechnology in the southern hemisphere. This creative and innovative edge has lead to a bourgeoning renaissance in the GLBT and wider community - obvious around every corner and in every conversation.

Melbourne is one of the best cities in the world for diners. Restaurants, cafes, pubs, clubs and bars are always lively in Melbourne. Melbourne is consistently ranked as one of the world’s most live able cities. Sophisticated and energetic, with cafe-filled laneways and funky boutiques, Melbourne is all about lifestyle. Melbourne is credited as one of the world’s most live able cities (Economist Intelligence Unit, London, 2002, 2003, 2004), a World Health Organization safe community, and is a safe place to live and study.

Melbourne is a city famous for its sense of style. Glamorous events are a trademark of the city, as are its cafes, wineries and shops. Melbourne is a tough market, but we are firmly placed as the top in our industry. Melbourne is the (self-proclaimed) coffee capital of Australia. You can get really good coffee nearly everywhere.

Melbourne is also home to Australia's television and games industry with roughly half all games industry employees now based in the southern state. Melbourne is the meeting point for several cultures, and if you venture away from the wide tree-lined boulevards, you’ll discover what makes this city unique. You can spend whole days wandering its extensive network of historic arcades and laneways, which brim with restaurants, cafes, funky bars, coffee shops, galleries and fashion outlets. Melbourne is often recognised as Australia’s most livable city, located about an hour’s flight south of Sydney on Port Phillip Bay. Hosting offices of all major national firms and a strong band of Victorian law firms, opportunities are strong for lawyers in private practice.

Melbourne is a reasonably priced city with good quality affordable living and plenty of accommodation. Your living costs will depend upon your lifestyle. Melbourne is the second largest city in Brevard County with a population of near 75,000. The largest city, Palm Bay (population over 92,000), adjoins Melbourne to the south. Melbourne is no exception. A high population of Aboriginal people live in and around Melbourne and the cultures associated with the different ‘mobs’ (tribal or language groups) from around Victoria are on display and can be experienced in many places.

Melbourne is the best place on the eastern journey. Everyone is so friendly there, lots of things to do for free, lots of places to go that aren't sketchy, and they have the casino. Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia but second to none in activities and attractions! Make sure to see the Botanical Gardens and don't forget to stop by one of the areas many wineries!

Melbourne is built on a coastal plain at the top of the giant horseshoe shaped Port Phillip Bay, which also serves as the mouth of the mighty Yarra River. Located on the southern coast of Australia’s eastern seaboard, Melbourne is perhaps Australia’s most cultured and politically conservative city. Melbourne is an important business, finance and manufacturing center and is also home to Australia's busiest seaport, which handles more than $75 billion in trade every year. Much of Australia's automotive industry is located in Melbourne including Ford, Toyota and Holden, and the headquarters of some of the biggest banks and largest corporations are located in the city including NAB, ANZ, BHP, Rio Tinto and Telstra. Melbourne is also Australia’s entertainment, sporting and cultural capital. Nearly every cuisine is represented in the many hundreds of Melbourne’s very reasonably-priced restaurants and cafes.
